Bali?

Looking to slow down and connect with the quieter side of Bali? Sidemen is a lush valley village in East Bali, surrounded by rice terraces, palm trees, and breathtaking views of Mount Agung. It’s the perfect place to unwind, reflect, and experience authentic Balinese life far away from the tourist crowds.

Out of everywhere we’ve been, this is our favourite place in Bali. Peaceful, green, and deeply soulful — Sidemen has a special kind of magic you’ll feel as soon as you arrive.

Why Choose Sidemen?

If you’re deciding between Ubud and Sidemen for a more peaceful inland stay, Sidemen is your go-to for pure tranquility. It offers an authentic glimpse of traditional Balinese culture, without the busy cafés and tour groups. While it’s quiet, there’s still plenty to do — from hiking through rice fields to visiting local weaving workshops. It’s the ideal reset after busier areas like Canggu or Ubud.

Where to Stay in Sidemen

For incredible views and total peace, choose a hillside stay overlooking the rice terraces or Mount Agung. There are charming eco-resorts, boutique villas, and family-run guesthouses that focus on slow living and nature. Many stays also offer yoga, cooking classes, or guided walks with locals.

How to Get to Sidemen

Sidemen is around 1.5–2 hours from Ubud or Sanur by car. The best way to get there is by taxi(Grab). Roads are well-paved, and the drive through East Bali is scenic and peaceful.

How Long to Stay

Sidemen is ideal for 2–4 days, depending on how much you want to relax versus explore. It’s great as a mid-trip breather or as part of a nature-focused route through East Bali and Amed. Many travellers wish they stayed longer.

Best Cafés and Restaurants in Sidemen

Sidemen may be quiet, but it has some lovely local cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy delicious food with stunning views:

  • Blue Paradise Coffee – perfect for a slow morning with coffee and jungle views

  • Lihat Sawah – traditional Indonesian food overlooking the rice fields

  • Sleeping Gajah Kitchen & Lounge – elevated dining in a peaceful, stylish setting

  • D’Padi Sidemen – cozy atmosphere and authentic local dishes in the middle of nature

What to Do in Sidemen? (My top 5!)

Sidemen is the perfect place to slow down and connect with the authentic side of Bali — think rice fields, mountain views, local culture, and calm energy. Here’s what we loved most during our stay:

  1. Swim at Gembleng Waterfall

    • Hidden in the hills near Sidemen, this natural waterfall is small but magical. There’s a viewpoint pool built into the rock where you can take a dip with views over the jungle — quiet, peaceful, and often completely to yourself.

  2. Stay and Unwind at Uma Ayu

    • This family-run guesthouse has one of the most breathtaking views in all of Bali. From the infinity pool to the warm hospitality, Uma Ayu is the perfect place to fully unwind and reconnect with nature.

  3. Walk Through the Sidemen Rice Terraces

    • One of the best things to do here is simply walk. Follow the small paths through the rice fields, meet locals along the way, and take in the peaceful rhythms of rural life — especially in the early morning or late afternoon.

  4. Visit Besakih Temple

    • Known as Bali’s Mother Temple, Besakih is one of the most important and sacred temples on the island. It’s located on the slopes of Mount Agung and just a short drive from Sidemen. Go early in the day to avoid crowds and experience the temple’s spiritual energy.

  5. Make Your Own Silver Ring

    • Join a local silversmith workshop and craft your own silver ring — a meaningful keepsake made with your own hands. Guided by artisans from the village, you’ll learn the traditional techniques passed down through generations. It’s a peaceful, hands-on experience that connects you to Bali’s craftsmanship in a personal way.
