Everything you need to know before going to Bali?

Looking for a relaxed yet lively place to start (or end) your Bali adventure? Canggu is a coastal village on the southwest coast of Bali that has grown into one of the island’s most popular spots. With its surf-ready beaches, endless smoothie bowls, boutique shops, and laid-back atmosphere, it’s the perfect blend of chill and social.

Why Choose Canggu?

If you're deciding between staying in Seminyak, Kuta, or Canggu, here’s my take: Canggu offers a more laid-back, youthful vibe without the heavy crowds of Kuta or the luxury feel of Seminyak. It’s a favourite among surfers, digital nomads, and creative travellers. While traffic is a bit hectic, most spots are accessible by scooter or on foot — and the beach sunsets? Unreal.

Where to Stay in Canggu

For easy beach access and a social atmosphere, stay near Batu Bolong Beach — this is the heart of Canggu. If you prefer a quieter stay, check out Berawa or the lush rice field surroundings just outside the center. Canggu has options for every budget, from trendy hostels and surf camps to private villas and boutique stays.

How to Get to Canggu

Canggu is about an hour from Ngurah Rai International Airport (depending on traffic). The easiest way to get there is by taxi, airport transfer, or Grab/Gojek (note: ride apps can be restricted in some areas).

How Long to Stay

Canggu is the kind of place where people plan to stay 3 days and end up staying 3 weeks. I recommend at least 3–5 days to soak in the vibe, try out the cafés, surf a few waves, and explore nearby areas like Seminyak or Tanah Lot.

Best Cafés and Restaurants in Canggu

Canggu is a foodie paradise — from smoothie bowls to wood-fired pizza. These are a few of my personal favourites:

  • Crate Café – iconic for its all-day breakfast and busy vibe

  • Milk & Madu – great coffee, open space, and family-friendly

  • Shady Shack – vegetarian heaven with a view over the rice fields

  • Luigi’s Hot Pizza – perfect for dinner and dancing later on

  • Varuna Warung – for authentic and budget-friendly Indonesian food

What to Do in Canggu? (My Top 6 Picks!)

Canggu is Bali’s hotspot for surfers, creatives, and café-lovers — a place where chilled beach days and buzzing nightlife blend perfectly. Here are my top picks for things to do during your stay:

  1. Surfing at Batu Bolong or Echo Beach

    • Whether you’re a beginner or experienced surfer, Canggu’s waves are a must. Rent a board on the beach or book a surf lesson to get started.

  2. Visit the Love Anchor Market

    • Every weekend, this open-air market comes alive with handmade jewelry, clothes, homeware and souvenirs — all set in a boho atmosphere.

  3. Wander Through La Brisa Sunday Market

    • Held in one of the most beautiful beach clubs in Bali, this market is a must-visit for sustainable brands, vintage finds, handmade products, and delicious food — all with ocean views and a chilled-out vibe.

  4. Create Your Own Perfume

    • Join a local perfume-making workshop and blend your own signature scent using natural Balinese ingredients. A creative and personal souvenir.

  5. Spend the Day at Finn’s Beach Club

    • Soak up the sun in a beachfront daybed, swim in the infinity pool, sip cocktails, and watch the sunset over the ocean — Canggu-style luxury.

  6. Chill at Times Beach Warung

    • A relaxed beach club right on the sand, perfect for sunset drinks and good food in a laid-back setting. In the evening, they often host movienights directly on the beach — bring a blanket and enjoy a film under the stars.

  7. Explore the Rice Fields by Scooter or Bike

    • Escape the busy streets and ride through Canggu’s quieter backroads. You’ll find palm-lined paths, peaceful rice paddies, and plenty of hidden cafés along the way.
