Pai

Pai is a peaceful little town in northern Thailand, about a 3-hour drive from Chiang Mai along a winding (and incredibly scenic) mountain road. Known for its relaxed vibe, lush landscapes, and bohemian energy, it’s a favorite among backpackers, nature lovers, and anyone looking to slow down. In this post, I’ll share my tips on where to stay, how to get there, and what to do in this charming mountain escape.

Where to stay in Pai?

We stayed near the town center, just a short walk from the famous Walking Street. The area is full of cozy guesthouses, bungalows, and boutique stays, often surrounded by rice fields or mountain views. While the center is lively in the evenings, it still feels peaceful and easygoing during the day — the perfect balance for exploring and relaxing.

How to get to Pai?

The most common way to reach Pai is by minivan from Chiang Mai. The ride takes around 3 hours and includes over 700 curves — so if you’re prone to motion sickness, take a travel pill beforehand. Some travelers opt to rent a scooter and drive the route themselves, which is incredibly scenic but only recommended for experienced riders due to the steep and winding roads.

How long should you stay in Pai?

I recommend staying at least three to four nights. Pai isn’t the kind of place you rush through — it’s made for slow mornings, scenic views, and time to just be. A few extra days give you space to settle in and enjoy everything Pai has to offer without feeling rushed.

My favourite cafés in Pai

Pai is full of cute and creative cafés where you can enjoy great food, coffee, and chill vibes. Here are two of my absolute favorites:

I Love Pai Café

Tucked away in nature with views over the rice fields, this café is all about peaceful vibes and simple, tasty food. Whether you're grabbing a healthy breakfast or just sipping coffee in a hammock, it's the perfect place to start your day slowly and mindfully. They have comfortable seating areas, mellow music, and a great selection of smoothies and drinks.

Om Garden Café

A classic Pai favorite, Om Garden is set in a beautiful hidden garden right in the heart of town. It’s known for fresh homemade bread, smoothie bowls, and hearty lunch options. The atmosphere is calm and welcoming, making it the perfect place to escape the buzz of the market and enjoy some green space.

Pai Night Market

Every evening, Pai’s main street transforms into a cozy night market with street food stalls, live music, and handmade crafts. It’s one of the best parts of staying in Pai — you can snack your way through vegan curries, banana pancakes, spring rolls, and fresh juices, all while soaking up the relaxed, artsy atmosphere. Come hungry, bring cash, and take your time exploring.

Top 10 things to do in Pai!

  1. Watch the Sunset at Pai Canyon

    • Pai Canyon is a must-visit especially at sunset. The narrow, winding ridges offer incredible views over the surrounding valleys, with golden light spilling over the hills as the sun goes down. The walk across the canyon is slightly adventurous, so wear good shoes and take your time. It's one of the best places in Pai to truly feel immersed in nature.

  2. Explore Pai’s Impressive Caves

    • The caves around Pai are perfect for a half-day adventure. Tham Lod Cave is the most famous you’ll float through the cave on a bamboo raft, guided by a lantern-holding local who’ll point out ancient cave paintings, stalagmites, and bats hanging overhead. It feels like stepping into another world. In the raining season the water will be to high, so you can only walk through the cave.

  3. Wander Through Pai’s Night Market

    • Every evening, the town’s main street (Pai's Walking Street) transforms into a vibrant night market with food stalls, handmade crafts, live music, and friendly locals. It’s one of the best parts of Pai: relaxed, colorful, and full of tasty surprises. Try vegan sushi, banana roti, spicy curries, or a fresh fruit shake while you browse handmade jewelry and local art.

  4. Visit the Chinese Village (Santichon Village)

    • Just a short drive from the center, the Chinese Village offers a glimpse into Yunnan culture, complete with clay houses, tea tastings, and even traditional dress-up photo ops. It's touristy, but also fun and scenic, especially with views from the nearby Yun Lai viewpoint at sunrise.

  5. Walk the Bamboo Bridge (Boon Ko Ku So Bridge)

    • This beautiful bamboo walkway stretches over rice fields and offers a peaceful way to connect with Pai’s rural side. It’s especially stunning during the rainy season when the fields are green and vibrant. Bring your camera and take your time — it’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down.

  6. Cool Off at Mor Paeng Waterfall

    • Popular among locals and travelers alike, Mor Paeng Waterfall is an easy-going place to swim, sunbathe, or slide down smooth rock surfaces into natural pools. It’s just a short ride from the center and makes for a perfect afternoon stop.

  7. Visit the Big Buddha (Wat Phra That Mae Yen)

    • Located on a hill overlooking Pai, this large white Buddha statue is visible from almost anywhere in town. Climb the staircase for panoramic views of the valley — especially beautiful early in the morning or late afternoon when the light is soft.

  8. Discover Pam Bok Waterfall

    • For a quieter, more shaded escape, Pam Bok Waterfall is a lovely hidden spot between cliffs. The water is cool, and the surrounding rocks give it a dramatic, tucked-away feel. It’s less crowded than Mor Paeng, making it ideal for a peaceful swim.

  9. Relax in the Hot Springs

    • After a few days of exploring, soak your muscles in Pai’s natural hot springs. Sai Ngam Hot Springs is a favorite for its clear mineral water and forest setting. Go early to beat the crowds and enjoy the serene, steamy vibes.

  10. Go Tipsy Tubing on the River

    • Looking for a fun and social way to experience Pai’s river? Try Tipsy Tubing — a slow, boozy float down the river with a group of fellow travelers. It’s part nature, part party: think music, drinks, and floating through the jungle on an inflatable tube. Along the way, you’ll stop at riverside bars for games and more drinks. It’s a popular group activity and a great way to meet new people — just be prepared to get wet, a little tipsy, and a lot of laughs.
