Langkawi

What to do in Langkawi Malaysia?

Langkawi is a stunning island located in the northwestern part of Malaysia, not far from Penang (Georgetown). Known for its lush landscapes and relaxed atmosphere, it’s a perfect destination for nature lovers, beach seekers, and adventurers alike. In this post, I’ll share my tips on where to stay, how to get there, and what to do on this beautiful island.

Where to Stay in Langkawi?

We stayed near Pantai Cenang Beach, the island’s most popular and lively area. Here, you’ll find plenty of restaurants, bars, and a vibrant nightlife. Many hotels and hostels offer access to private beach areas, so even in a busier part of the island, you can enjoy peace and quiet by the sea. This area is also a great starting point for tours and excursions around Langkawi.

How to Get to Langkawi?

Currently, the safest and most convenient way to get to Langkawi is by plane (30minutes from Penang). There used to be ferry services, but they were discontinued due to safety concerns. Some websites and tourist agencies still advertise boat trips, but I highly recommend flying it’s quicker, safer, and with airlines like AirAsia, very affordable.

How long should you stay in Langkawi?

I recommend staying for at least four nights, especially if you're looking to unwind. There's so much to explore on the island, and a few extra days will give you the time to truly enjoy it all.

What are the best restaurants/cafe's?

Exploring Langkawi isn’t just about beaches and waterfalls — the island also has some amazing places to eat, relax, and soak up the local vibe. From cozy cafés to lively night markets, here are a few of my favorite food and drink spots on the island:

  • Red Tomato
This laid-back restaurant has a unique charm — the owner’s cats roam freely through the restaurant and might even come over for a cuddle while you sip your coffee. The menu leans toward Western dishes, with fresh croissants and hearty breakfasts. It's a cozy spot to start your day or enjoy a calm lunch in the shade.

  • The Smiling Buffalo
Without a doubt, The Smiling Buffalo is the best breakfast café on Langkawi. Whether you're an early riser or a brunch lover, this place serves breakfast all day long. Don’t miss the pancakes with fresh tropical fruit — they’re a dream. The relaxed, tropical setting makes it the perfect place to chill before heading out on your daily adventure.

  • The Kasbah
Looking for a nice spot to wind down in the evening? Head to The Kasbah between 5 PM and 7 PM for happy hour. Their cocktails are not only delicious but also super affordable during this time. It’s a great place to start your evening with some good drinks and a laid-back vibe.

Langkawi Night Markets

If you're into local food, don’t miss the night markets — they’re my favorite thing on the island. Each night, the market pops up in a different location, so it’s also a great way to see more of Langkawi. Try some satay, fresh juices, and local desserts while strolling past food stalls and soaking up the atmosphere.

Here’s the weekly schedule:

  • Monday: Ulu Melaka

  • Wednesday: Pekan Kuah

  • Thursday: Temoyong

  • Friday: Ayer Hangat

  • Saturday: Pekan Kuah

  • Sunday: Padang Matsirat

The night markets usually start around 5 PM and run until 10 PM. Bring cash, come hungry, and get ready to taste your way through Langkawi!

Seven Wells Waterfall
What to Do in Langkawi? (My top 8 things!)

One of the best ways to explore Langkawi is by renting a motorbike (35MYR (€8) per day). The island is easy to navigate, and there are so many scenic spots to discover along the way from temples and waterfalls to untouched beaches and jungle trails.

  1. Wat Koh Wanararm Temple

    • Tucked away in the hills, this serene Buddhist temple is the perfect place to slow down, reflect, and soak in a bit of local culture. Peaceful, quiet, and surrounded by nature — ideal for a mindful break.

  2. Seven Wells Waterfall (Telaga Tujuh)

    • This beautiful waterfall isn’t accessible by car or bike — a short hike up a series of steps is required. Bring water and wear comfy shoes, because the 20–30 minute climb is worth every step. At the top, you’ll find stunning views, natural pools for swimming, and nearby smaller falls that are easier to reach if you're short on time (or energy).

  3. Kilim Geoforest Park

    • Looking for something truly special? Book a guided tour through Kilim Geoforest Park. You’ll cruise through mangroves, sail briefly on the open sea, and enjoy a tasty local lunch along the way. Expect to see monkeys, eagles, and if you’re lucky — snakes! It’s an amazing way to experience Langkawi’s unique ecosystem. The tour takes around 6 hours and costs about 225 MYR (€47), including hotel pick-up and drop-off.

  4. Night Markets

    • Want to taste Langkawi? Head to one of the island’s six rotating night markets. From fresh tropical fruit and sizzling street food to handmade souvenirs — this is the place to dive into local life.

  5. Sunset Boat Tour

    • End your day on the water with a magical sunset boat ride. Calm seas, golden skies, and the perfect way to wind down.

  6. Sandy Skull Beach

    • My favorite beach on the island — peaceful, scenic, and perfect for relaxing, swimming, or catching a quiet sunset away from the crowds.

  7. Gunung Raya

    • Langkawi’s highest peak offers sweeping panoramic views of the island. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the sea. Drive or hike your way up and don’t forget your camera!

  8. Durian Perangin Waterfall

    • This lush waterfall is easier to access than Seven Wells and makes for a refreshing stop during a road trip around the island. Surrounded by greenery and just enough off the beaten path.
