Practical matters

Currency

In Singapore, the currency used is the Singapore Dollar (SGD). ATMs are widely available and accept most international debit and credit cards. Transaction fees may apply depending on your bank. Card payments are accepted almost everywhere — from restaurants and shops to public transport. Even hawker centres and small cafés increasingly accept contactless payments like PayWave or mobile wallets. However, it’s still a good idea to carry some cash for smaller purchases or places that don’t take cards.

Vocabulary

In Singapore, there are four official languages:

  1. English – Used as the main language in government, education, and business. It’s the most widely spoken language across the country.

  2. Mandarin Chinese – Spoken by the majority of the Chinese population.

  3. Malay – The national language of Singapore, used in the national anthem and military commands.

  4. Tamil – Spoken by the Indian Tamil community.

Visa

In Singapore, most nationalities can enter visa-free for short stays. For example, travelers from the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia and many other countries can stay up to 90 days without a visa for tourism or business purposes.

Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from the date of entry and that you have proof of onward travel, such as a return ticket. Upon arrival, you may be asked to show accommodation details and sufficient funds for your stay.

If you plan to stay longer, work, or study in Singapore, you’ll need to apply for the appropriate visa in advance through the Singapore Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA).

No visa on arrival is available — all visa applications must be approved before entry if you're from a visa-required country.
